Victory

Yesterday while I was preparing for this communion meditation a song popped into my head, one that I haven’t heard in what seems like years. It was “Victory in Jesus”. It was a pretty well known song, and still is, written by a southern gospel legend Eugene Monroe Bartlett back in 1939. Inspiration from this song came from:

1 Corinthians 15:57"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

The song and verse speaks of our VICTORY over death and sin, our eternal life through Jesus Christ. He went out and gave us that victory by paying a price with his own sinless blood. I know that because I’ve read the whole story.

But I can’t help but think of what people thought when Jesus was here on this Earth. They were expecting a King to rise up and rule over their oppressors, maybe one mighty in battle. The Sadducees and the Pharisees felt threatened by his influence over the people. They felt threatened and therefore must compete with him. Little did they know, how pointless it was. They were trying to compete with the maker of the rules, the author of life. The whole time he was here he was teaching and demonstrating right up to the very last breath as he hung on the cross, and that was love: To love God because he first loved us, to love each other. The competition divided but, love, love unites. And that is why we are here right now. We do have Victory in Jesus. We were bought and paid for by his redeeming blood.
